HOD Civil Engineering
The Department of Civil Engineering was established in 1998 and commenced academic activities with six (6) pioneer cadets of 49RC for the B.Eng Civil Engineering degree which is a 5-year programme. The Department graduated its first set of cadets at the end of the 2000/2001 Session. So far, a total of 126 cadets have graduated from the department. In 2014, the department commenced Postgraduate Diploma in Civil Engineering (PGDCE). The PGDCE programme is open to both military and civilian students. The first set of graduates were produced at the end of 2014/2015 and the second set of PGDCE graduated in the 2015/2016 Session. The department commenced Master’s degree in Structures and Geotechnics in 2017/2018 session while Master’s degree in Water Resources commenced in 2019/2020 se department also commences Doctor in Philosophy in Geotechnics in 2019/2020 session.
The general responsibility of the Civil Engineering department is to produce graduate military officers with high academic standards, adequate background which will be immediate value to the needs of the military in particular, industry and nation in general.
The vision of the Department of Civil Engineering for the next ten years is to produce inimitable high quality graduates with broad-based training in Civil Engineering designed to serve as a foundation for development of the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Nation at large
The general philosophy of the Civil Engineering programme is to produce graduate military offices with high academic standards, an adequate background that will be of immediate value to the needs of the military in particular, industry and nation in general.
To achieve the above aim, the training of Civil Engineering programme is tailored towards these objectives:
Ability to design engineering projects, supervises construction process, operate and maintain such schemes. Investigate and evaluate various Civil Engineering Structures/Projects.
Install and maintain Civil Engineering systems so that they can perform optimally in peace and wartime environment.
Adopt and adapt exogenous technology in order to solve local Civil Engineering problems.
Provide technical and management leadership for the needs of the Armed Forces and professional level.
Apply the fundamental principle methods of analysis and design to the development and modification of warlike items.

Admission into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) is highly competitive considering the Military training and the academic demands. The basic requirements are:
Students must be Nigerian citizens, though foreign students base on the bilateral agreement(s) are also admitted.
Age must fall within 16 – 19 years.
Students must be physically, mentally and medically fit.
Students must possess (five) 5 credits pass inappropriate subjects in not more than two sittings in WASCE/NECO including English language and Mathematics/Geography/Technical Drawing.
Students must pass the minimum point for the JAMB examination
Having the above requirements, applicants must process the NDA entrance application form, sit and pass the entrance examination after which successful candidates are shortlisted for the Armed Forces Selection Board (AFSB) interview on a quota basis. At the selection process, candidates are made to undergo the following:
- Medical Examination
- Physical Training
- Written Aptitude Test
- Planning Exercise
- Oral Interview
PGD (Civil) Programme
- The admission requirements are in accordance with the NUC and COREN minimum standards and are as follows:
- Higher National Diploma (HND) in Civil Engineering, with at least Lower Credit grade.
- Sc, B.Eng or B.Tech degree in Civil Engineering with at least Third class (Hons) or Pass (minimum) degree
- Higher National Diploma (HND) in Water Resources Engineering with at least a Lower Credit grade
- Sc or B.Eng in Water Resources Engineering with at least a Third Class (Hons) degree
Eng. (Civil) Programme
MSc (Civil) programme was drawn up to meet the minimum NUC standard. Two (2) semesters would be devoted to course work while the second year would be devoted to Research and Thesis. To be eligible for admission into the MSc Geotechnical programme a candidate must possess:
A Second Class Honours degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized university or equivalent institution.
- Any other qualification which together with relevant experience is deemed to be equivalent to (a) above by the department.
To successfully complete the programme leading to the award of MSc Structures, Geotechnics or Water Resources and Environmental options, a registered student must have met all postgraduate school and Departmental requirements. In addition, the student must have:
Enrolled for a minimum of two (2) years for a full-time MSc programme or Three (3) years for a part-time programme.
D. (Civil) Programme
To be eligible for admission into PhD. Programme a candidate must possess:
In addition to having obtained a Second Class Honours degree in Civil Engineering, and Master Degree (minimum of 3.5/5 grade) from reputable higher institutions with good and actualize research proposals. They must possess the requisite O’levels requirement of five (5) credits in English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and any other science subject and /or A ‘level passes in at least two courses (of Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics)
Any other qualification, which together with relevant experience is deemed to be equivalent to (a) above by the department and approved by the Faculty Board and Senate.
