COUNCIL FOR THE REGULATION OF ENGINEERING IN NIGERIA OUTCOME BASED ACCREDITATION TEAM VISIT NDA

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria ( COREN ) recently visited Nigerian Defence Academy ( NDA) for accreditation visitation of the institution’s engineering programmes.

Speaking, after the days long accreditation visit,the Team Lead, Engineer Professor Nurudden Muhammad,on behalf of the 12- man delegation expressed profound gratitude to the Commandant NDA Major General JO Ochai and the entire Staff and Cadets of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology for the cooperation and warm reception and hospitality accorded the Team during their exercise in the Academy.

He stated that COREN is working hard to improve engineering education and training.The Team Lead further stated that the accreditation visitation by COREN is for partnership and growth, not for witch- hunting and is aimed at building, not destroying. In his words ” It is very strict process; firm but fair” Professor Nurudden added.

He said that the Team had in past few days of the exercise, gone round the Academy, inspected most of the facilities in the Faculty including the NDA Library, the workshops, laboratories and lecture theatres.He further stated that the visitation Team also interacted with some cadets and Staff(academic and non -academic)
Professor Nurudden also said the COREN visitation Team assessed the components of the Ten Criteria Outcome Based Education (OBE) to ascertain the compliance to each criterion.

The accreditation Team according to Professor Nurudden looked at the entire academic curriculum curriculum to determine its adequacy in terms of the expected professional requirements of the programme as well as staff -to -students ratios.

At the end of the exercise, the accreditation visitation Team observed that the engineering programmes of NDA have adequate physical facilities and infrastructure such as staff rooms,classroom, laboratories, workshop as well as lectures theatres for training of engineering students.

Other positive feedback from COREN include adequate, highly committed,motivated and competent lecturers and that majority of the academic staff are COREN registered.The Team also noticed that admission requirements are followed strictly.Every cadet admitted met minimum requirements set by both Joint Admission and Matriculation Board as well as COREN.

While commending NDA for Staff development that is in place, Professor Nurudden enjoined the Academy to sustain sponsorship for higher degrees coupled with seminars and conferences. He applauded the NDA for the good internet facility that cut across the Faculty as well as the good succession plan among the teaching staff.

The departments visited include Civil, Electrical and Electronics as well as Mechanical Engineering.

This is the first time NDA is hosting OBE accreditation. Being recognized for this feat places the NDA among the few institutions in Nigeria that have
attained this standard.

The positive feedback from the COREN’s visit is a testament to the strategic guidance of the Commandant NDA Major General JO Ochai and the hard work and dedication put in by the faculty and staff at the NDA. It also demonstrates the Academy’s willingness to adhere to the regulations and guidelines set by regulatory bodies
