BENCHMARKING: NIGERIAN DEFENCE ACADEMY DELEGATION VISITS MILITARY ACADEMIES IN BRAZIL

In a bid to enhance training, the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) carried out a benchmarking exercise of various military academies in Brazil with a view to learning from their experiences and ways of conducting training. The visit was also aimed at fostering relationship between NDA and Brazilian military academies as well as to establish capacity building collaboration. The NDA delegation was led by the Commandant, Major General JO Ochai. Other members of the NDA Team comprised officers selected from the Academic Branch, Cadets Brigade as well as the Directorate of Military Training.During the week- long visit, from 16 – 23 March 2024, the NDA Team visited the Escola de Naval (Brazilian Naval Academy), Agulhas Negras Military Academy (Army Academy), and the Academia da Forca Aerea (Brazilian Air Force Academy). Some of the key areas the visit focused on were the military academies’ training curriculum, learning facilities, general administration of cadets, admission process, history of the academies and staffing among others.During the visit, the NDA delegation had the opportunity to witness some training routines of the cadets including daily regimental parades. The team listened to presentations and was given a guided tour of facilities in all the academies visited. The team also interacted and had lunch with the cadets in their various institution.Some of the highpoints of the visit include a guided tour of a state of the art ship simulator for training of the midshipmen at the Brazilian Naval Academy, visit to the Army Academy library, where the NDA delegation saw first- hand the most expensive Atlas Map of the world designed by Arnold Colon in 1965 and the opportunity to operate the various aircraft simulators at the Air Force Academy. The NDA team also visited some tourist sites including the Forte de Copacabana and the Christ the Redeemer both in Rio de Janeiro. Brazil has a huge territory consisting of various ecosystems, such as the Amazon rainforest, recognised as having the greatest biological diversity in the world and the world’s biggest river Amazon. Recall that one of the priorities of the NDA Commandant is the establishment of a world class biodiversity conservation center in the NDA.Members of the Commandant’s Team during the visit include the Academy Registrar Brigadier General AM Tukur, the Senior Instructor Air Force Wing, Wing Commander C Onyedima, Staff Officer Grade 1 Cadets’ Brigade Lieutenant Colonel J Abuo as well as Lieutenant (NN) MA Balogun.
