Dr Umar Lawal hails from Zuru Local Government Area of Kebbi State and was born on the 15th August 1974. Dr Umar started his primary education at Danga Gomo Model primary school Zuru from 1982-1987 and he proceeded to Haliru Abdu Arabic secondary school at B/Kebbi now in Jega and Sheikh Abubakar Gumi Memorial College Sokoto for his Junior Secondary School Leaving Certificate and Grade Two (II) Teacher Training Certificate respectively. Dr Umar obtained a Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) from Federal College of Education, Kontagora in 1998. He was admitted into Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU) in 2000 and graduated with a Bachelor of Library and Information Science in 2004 with second class honours upper division. He also later in 2010 and 2014 obtained Masters of Library Science (MLS) and PhD in Library Science from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria respectively.
Dr Umar Lawal started his career as a Grade II teacher working with the State Universal Basic Education Board, B/Kebbi, Kebbi State. In 2006, he was employed as Librarian II in the National Library of Nigeria Abuja and redeployed to Ilorin Branch, Kwara State. Dr Umar left the National Library of Nigeria in 2006 after serving for three months to make an appointment as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Library & Information Science, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, where he taught till 2011. He later proceeded to Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University, Katsina, as a lecturer in the Department of Library & Information Science. Dr Umar later became the Head of the Department of Library and Information Science. A position he held until he was seconded to the Nigerian Defence Academy.
Dr Umar Lawal is currently the Academy Librarian of the Nigerian Defence Academy. He has held several positions within his academic career; and published many journals, articles and attended both local and international conferences. He is also a Chartered Librarian and the current chairman of Nigerian Library Association (NLA) Kaduna State Chapter, Member, Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Member, International Society for Development and Sustainability (ISDS) Japan and Fellow Member, Institute of Information management (IIM)- Africa. Dr Umar is happily married with children
His hobbies include reading, watching movies, travelling and Intellectual Discourse.
