BIOGRAPHY OF MAJOR GENERAL IM YUSUF

Maj Gen Ibrahim Manu Yusuf was born on 19 May 1967 and was commissioned into the NA in Sep 1990. As a young officer in the Armoured Corps, he had a 3-year duty tour in ECOMOG (1993-1996). He was an instructor in the Nigerian Defence Academy and the Nigerian Army Armoured Corps Centre and School. He also served as a Directing Staff at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College as well as National Defence College. He was a Course Director at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, Accra Ghana. He has held a number of key staff appointments which include Registrar of the Academy, Deputy Director Force Generation and Director Campaign Planning, Army Headquarters Department of Operations. It was in the latter appointment that he articulated the Campaign Plan for Operation LAFIYA DOLE and also evolved the blueprint for the identification of BHT members by creating the posters of BHT Wanted List. Prominent among his command appointments were his command of 21 Armoured Brigade Maiduguri during Operation ZAMAN LAFIYA from 2013 – 2014 within which his brigade was responsible for the security of Maiduguri, the Sambisa forest and the whole of Southern Borno State. During this period, he earned a commendation for gallantry in the numerous operations carried out by his Brigade. He also served as the GỌC 7 Division where he again earned a letter of commendation for gallantry of his Division during Operation DEEP PUNCH 2. It was to his credit that over 3,000 of his troops that took part in the Sambisa Offensive were promoted by the Chief of Army Staff and he was awarded the Nigerian Army Outstanding Operational Command Medal.
Maj Gen Yusuf is a graduate of the Joint Services Command and Staff College United Kingdom and National Defence College Bangladesh. His academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, Master of Arts Degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy from the Ahmadu Bello University as well as a Master of Arts Degree in Defence Studies from Kings College London. The senior officer holds a Masters’ degree in Strategic Studies and a Postgraduate Diploma in Strategic Management from the Chartered Management Institute of the United Kingdom and is a member of the Institute. He has attended numerous professional and academic courses at the Naval Postgraduate School Monterrey USA, Norwegian Defence International Centre Norway, Transition International in The Netherlands and Harvard Kennedy School Boston USA amongst others. He has 6 publications to his credit – 3 contributions to book chapters and 3 journal publications. His most recent publication in the NARC Journal is titled “Counter Insurgency Operations in the Lake Chad Basin: MNJTF in Perspective’. The General has been decorated with the Forces Service Star, Meritorious Service Star, Distinguished Service Star, Grand Service Star, Field Command Medal, Field Command Medal of Honour, General Operations Medal, Foreign Training Assistance Medal, ECOMOG Medal, MNJTF Medal and Operations ZAMAN LAFIYA, LAFIYA DOLE and YANCINTAFKI Medals. He was also awarded the ‘National Order of Chad’ in recognition of his immense contributions to the MNJTF as Force Commander. His military awards include 2 COAS awards as well as psc(ij), psc(+) and fellowship of the National Defence College Nigeria and Bangladesh. He enjoys walking, reading and watching movies. Notably, he has served in various capacities in this Prestigious Institution as Instructor, MA and Registrar.
Before his posting to NDA as Commandant, Maj Gen IM Yusuf was the Chief of Operations Nigerian Army. Prior to that, was the Force Commander MNJTF.
