The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA)has unveiled an emblem and a crest commemorating 60 years since its establishment, as part of activities marking the institution’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations which commenced on Friday 2nd February and are expectedly to conclude on Saturday 10 February,2024.

At an elaborate ceremony that saw the launching and unveiling the 60th Anniversary Emblem and Crest on Monday,5th February, 2024 at the NDA Auditorium, Afaka, and which was graced by graduates of the NDA, former Commandants of the Academy, serving and retired military officers, operatives of other security and paramilitary organisations, as well as representatives of institutions, the Special Guest of Honour (SGOH) at the event, Major General Rabiu Aliyu (Rtd), who is a member of Regular Course 1, NDA’s pioneer course of 1964, expressed satisfaction with the level of growth attained by the Nigerian Defence Academy.He commended the transformations witnessed in NDA over the decades, which include its upgrade to a degree-awarding institution in 1985, and its subsequent introduction of postgraduate programmes, as well as its successful relocation to its Permanent Site in Afaka. According to General Aliyu (Rtd), the 60th Anniversary celebration is a milestone achievement for the Academy and the successes it has recorded over several decades.

Looking at the contemporary security challenges in the country and around the world, the SGOH urged the Commandant NDA, Major General JO Ochai, to continue the good work of producing officers with integrity and discipline,for which NDA is globally renowned.He encouraged NDA to continue to develop better and more modern, advanced paths to training in a way that will enrich the training curriculum so as to enable NDA graduates to meet up with the contemporary security challenges.

To the cadets currently undergoing training in NDA, the SGOH enjoined them to be dedicated, determined and committed to their training in the Academy, adding that there are a lot of uncertainty, vigorous and complex challenges that await them in the field.

In his Welcome Address,the Commandant NDA,Major General JO Ochai, revealed that the NDA, since inception on 5 February 1964, has continued to serve the nation in line with its vision and missions.While recounting the successes recorded by the Academy in the last six decades,General Ochai appreciated the efforts of all stakeholders who have contributed in one way or the other in response to the defence needs of the independent Nigeria, and those who contributed to the upgrade of NDA to a degree-awarding institution, which, he noted, has over time transformed NDA into a Center of Excellence for Military Training, educational advancement and character development.

According to him, NDA’s comprehensive curriculum is packed with contemporary military training, academic education and ethical development to equip cadets with the skills and values essential to their roles as future military leaders.He acknowledged the contributions of the founding fathers of NDA, former Commandants, staff and cadets for their sacrifices and dedication which have been instrumental in shaping the Academy into a pillar of the national security architecture and a source of pride to the nation.

The Commandant also used the occasion to appreciate the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, members of the NDA Council,the Chief of Defence Staff,General CG Musa, and the Service Chiefs for their efforts towards ensuring that the Academy lives up to the nation’s expectations.

The highlight of the event, was the unveiling of the Diamond Jubilee Emblem and Crest by the Special Guest of Honour, Major General Rabiu Aliyu, accompanied by the Commandant NDA, Major General JO Ochai, and former Commandants of the NDA present at the occasion .The event also witnessed the presentation of souvenir to the SGOH.
