Department of Biotechnology

OVERVIEW

The Department of Biotechnology in the Faculty of Science, Nigerian Defence Academy was created from the already existing Department of Biological Sciences.  The Department was created in November, 2019 to address the dearth of the critical mass of human resources required for modern biotechnology research and teaching which the current mainstay of global trends in biotechnology is.

The Department which already has a well-established and vibrant post graduate programme in Biotechnology boasts of a well-equipped Biotechnology Laboratory and a crop of seasoned and competent academic and technical staff involved in lecturing and research in Biotechnology.

MISSION

The mission of the Academy is to provide each officer cadet with the knowledge, skills and values necessary to meet the requirement of a military officer through military, academic and character development. At the postgraduate level, to provide and develop in the graduate students the in-depth analytic skills in enquiry, research and creative thinking to be able to tackle the inherent problems in security and social development.

To achieve this objective, a well-equipped Military Biotechnology Research Centre has been established in the Department for the training of cadets and for the conduct of research in Forensic DNA analysis, Biosecurity, drugs and vaccine development and other aspects of modern Biotechnology research. This is to meet the future challenges in the ever-evolving global bio warfare strategies.
