Application for Admission into the Nigerian Defence Academy 74 Regular Course



As the 2021/2022 Cadets’ Brigade Inter- Battalion Athletics Competition drew to a close at the Nigerian Defence Academy Sports Complex Afaka, Abyssinia Battalion surpassed other regular battalions to clinch the winner’s trophy after edging out Burma, Dalet and Mogadishu Battalions in most of the events during the keenly contested competition.

Abyssinia Battalion, won a total of 11 Gold, 10 Silver and 7 Bronze medals to emerged winners ahead of Dalet Battalion, which came second at the end of the competition with 10 Gold, 11 Silver and 10 Bronze medals. The third position went to Mogadishu Battalion with 9 Gold, 8 Silver and 6 Bronze medals while Burma Battalion placed fourth position on the medals table with 4 Gold, 5 Silver and 11 Bronze medals.

The Special Guest of Honour (SGOH), Air Vice Marshal NK Khumzi, Air Officer Commanding Air Training Command (AOC ATC) Kaduna, underscored the importance of athletics as an essential requirement for the development of physical fitness and mental wellbeing of military personnel. He described sporting activities as bridge builders that encourage good team spirit among teammates and competitors alike.

The SGOH noted that all the participants gave in their best to win laurels as he congratulated the winning battalion while encouraging other battalions to learn and improve on their shortcomings.

Speaking further, AVM Khumzi stated that athletics prepare cadets for the great tasks ahead as officers in the Nigerian Armed Forces, particularly as it relates to the rigorous nature of the profession. He therefore, commended the leadership of the Academy and members of the training team for the success of the 4-Day events.

Earlier, during the opening ceremony of the event the Commandant NDA Maj Gen IM Yusuf charged the competing Cadets to maintain a healthy spirit of sportsmanship. He added, that the Cadets’ Brigade Inter battalion Athletics competition is design to build the Cadets’ endurance, encourage team work and foster the spirit of sportsmanship amongst the cadets.

The Field and Track events competed for includes Javelin, Shot Put, Discus, 1500m, 5000m,10000m and 4x400m Combat relay amongst others.

Highpoints of the event included a march past by the participants, novelty race by the Deputy Commandant, Academy Provost, Directors, Senior Academic Staff and Academy Youth Corps members. The climax of the event was the presentation of medals to deserving cadets and overall trophy to the winning battalion.
